Hospital – UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL SOUTHAMPTON NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

Location – Southampton General Hospital

Post Title – Consultant Upper GI Surgeon

Start Date of Post – ASAP

Contract Length – Permanent

Online applications are invited for a whole time (10 PA) Consultant Upper GI Surgeon.

University Hospital Southampton Foundation NHS Trust is a major leading Teaching Trust and offers excellent personal development and research opportunities.

We are seeking a new colleague to augment the upper GI surgical service including the provision of complex benign and cancer surgery.

The successful candidate will join the emergency general surgery on-call rota for weekends (1 in 12) and take part in a new Upper GI specialty weekend rota (1 in 4).

As a tertiary centre for the south of England you will also be key to developing closer links with our surrounding hospitals. This post will also ensure that our junior doctors continue to receive excellent training and development. As the volume of upper GI work continues to increase this post will also be vital to ensure that elective lists are cross covered to ensure we deliver on our elective 18 week work and cancer standards. You will be based at the Southampton General Hospital site, but you will be expected to provide surgical service at Lymington Hospital and develop the range of Upper GI procedures that can be performed “off-site” and as day cases.

You will also be responsible for improving the pathways for managing emergency patients, supporting emergency surgical colleagues and be part of the team to manage complex cases.

Applicants should be strongly motivated to work in a teaching hospital and should be prepared to take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and clinical management.

You will work with internal and external clinicians to grow and develop the model of care across the region to ensure the service is responsive to the needs of the local and regional population.

Applicants should have a CCT or be on the GMC’s Specialist Register. Applicants who are within six months of obtaining their CCT on the date of the AAC may also apply.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their competence to communicate in spoken and written English.

Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that candidates should provide confirmation of this from the relevant College or Faculty in the United Kingdom and attach the confirmation to your application.

When applying please remember to include your CCT date in the Membership of professional bodies section of the online application form, which is where you must also record your GMC number.
All applications must be made online. CV or paper applications are not accepted.

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and Right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.  Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.
