Are you a highly motivated, enthusiastic team player with a caring soul?

If you are a registered nurse or operating department practitioner, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT) invites you to come and join our diverse and dynamic team in theatres. The staff experience is high on our agenda and we have a dedicated theatre education team to facilitate your clinical and professional development in a supportive and stimulating learning environment.

We are looking to recruit experienced scrub theatre practitioners in trauma & orthopaedics. Our theatres continually demonstrate ongoing excellence of patient care and are fundamentally about helping people to get well.

You need to have a commitment to developing others and support the theatre department’s management structure. This post will enable the successful applicants the opportunity to further develop their scrub and leadership expertise in what is a demanding area of complex adult and paediatric trauma & orthopaedic surgery. As the unit develops further an early adopter of change for innovative working will be required. The successful post holders will be required to cover a full range of shifts to include early, late, nights, on-call and weekends in support of our service commitments 24/7.

We have 8 dedicated trauma and orthopaedics theatres daily which includes paediatric orthopaedics, providing both elective and emergency surgery. The trauma and orthopaedic theatre team specialises in elective hip, knee, spine, shoulder, hand and foot and ankle surgery. We are one of the leading major trauma centres in the south and we specialise in adult and paediatric major trauma, limb reconstruction with plastic surgery and pelvic and acetabular reconstruction. We are a leading research centre in the south; it is an innovative and stimulating environment; some of our pioneering works have been featured in news articles and on national television.

Applications are invited from highly skilled individuals with an interest in scrub. For the right individuals, we are also able to offer significant educational opportunities, including:

  • In-house theatre and anaesthetic course (for nurses)
  • Leadership development courses (foundation and intermediate management)
  • University post-qualifying modules (such as mentorship, care of the deteriorating patient, leadership and management of change)
  • surgical first assistants

We have a shift pattern of internal rotation, full and part-time hours are available to applicants who are fully flexible. Informal visits are highly recommended.
